HOW DOES HAIR VOLUMIZER WORK?

    What It Is

    • A hair volumizer is a hair styling product that adds volume and body to thin or flat hair. Often in the form of shampoos, conditioners or mousses, hair volumizers temporarily give flat hair some much-needed thickness. Some hair volumizers are also found in the forms of hair sprays, pomades, hair masks and thickening creams.

    How It Works

    • Hair volumizers contain humectants that swell the hair shaft, temporarily making it look thicker. Polymers in the hair volumizers coat each strand, also adding to the thicker look. A humectant is a non-oily substance that pulls in moisture from the surrounding environment and attracts it to the hair strand. The increased moisture also helps each strand of hair look thicker. These ingredients give hair body, bounce and fullness.

    How To Use

    • Hair volumizers are relatively easy to use, depending on what form. A hair volumizing shampoo and conditioner are used just like regular shampoo and conditioners. Volumizing sprays and mousses are worked into dry or wet hair, while hair masks are left in wet hair for a few minutes to give it body and fullness. Volumizers can be found at drugstores, supermarkets and beauty salons.

      Homemade Hair Volumizers

Add volume and body to your hair with a homemade hair volumizer made from common items in the kitchen.

There are many ways to add volume to your hair, including thickening, plumping and adding bounce. Most store-bought shampoos, conditioners and mousses achieve this action through polymers and humectants that coat the hair, causing the hair’s shaft to increase in size. However, these products can be expensive. Luckily, there is a cheaper, faster alternative to adding volume to your hair. You can make a homemade hair volumizer using products you already have in your house to achieve the desired effect.

      1. Beer Spray

        • Yeast causes bread to rise, but it can also add volume to limp and lifeless hair. You can create a homemade hair volumizer by mixing a can of regular beer to ¼ cup of water. Do not use light beer, as this will not achieve the proper volume. Add 1 tbsp. of lemon or lime juice to the mixture for an improved aroma. Add the mixture to a spray bottle and spritz a generous amount onto the roots of you hair and massage into the scalp. Allow the beer to dry and style your hair as usual

        Beer Shampoo

        • Some people might be worried about the lingering odor of beer in their hair when using it as a volumizer. You can reduce the odor and achieve the same effect by creating a beer volumizing shampoo. On the stove, boil ¾ of a cup of regular beer down until it reduces to ¼ cup. Once the beer has cooled, add it to one cup of shampoo. Massage the beer shampoo into your scalp and leave in for five minutes before rinsing to achieve the best effects.

        Gelatin

        • While powdered gelatin is typically an ingredient for molded desserts, gelatin can also add thickness and volume to your hair. Create a volumizing shampoo by adding 1 tbsp. of powdered gelatin to your shampoo bottle. Mix thoroughly and shampoo your hair as usual.

        Sugar

        • Sugar also acts as a volumizer, creating bouncy, voluminous hair. You can create a homemade volumizing spray using sugar as the main ingredient. Add two packets of real sugar to one 20-oz. bottle of water. Mix thoroughly and spritz the mixture onto the roots of your hair prior to styling.

        Dairy Products

        • Milk products make an excellent leave-in homemade volumizing treatment. While you are in the shower, saturate your hair from root to tip in half-and-half and leave in for five minutes. Rinse your hair, blow-dry and style as usual. Another leave-in treatment involves mixing three egg whites with water to form a runny consistency. Leave the egg mixture in your hair for five minutes before rinsing.

If you are not keen on using animal products, you can create the same effect using coconut milk. However, when using coconut milk, you do not have to rinse. Spray coconut milk onto clean, wet hair, blow-dry and style your hair with added thickness and volume.
