HOW TO MAKE YOUR PERFUME LAST

how to make perfume last

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2012

When it comes to fragrances and perfumes, I tend to stand alone in my choices and tastes for someone my age.Actually, I sometimes feel like a snob. What most of my friends call “perfume”, I call body spray. And it is. It’s a body spray from Bath and Body or Victoria’s Secret. I never ever correct my friends because: a) who am I to do such a thing, and b) that’s rude in my book. But generally my friends think that Chanel No. 5 smells “too old” and that my Couture by Badgley Mischka is just no good. I nearly cry every time they criticize my fragrance collection. But that doesn’t mean I don’t wear my Japanese Cherry Blossom by Bath and Body Works nearly everyday (oddly enough if you wear Japanese Cherry Blossom body lotion and wear Paris Hilton’s Can Can perfume, you will undoubtedly be the most gorgeous smelling creature on earth!)But I am not ashamed of my love for perfumes, eau de toilettes, and all things that smell good. What does get me upset is the fact that loads of my perfumes tend to disappear off my skin in what seems like minutes. But with much trial and error, months of testing, and countless hours of reading Allure and various websites, yours truly has devised a list of awesome tips to make your perfume- or any fragrance- last.

1. Take a shower.
I know that sounds odd but it’s true. Scents last longer on clean, fresh and healthy skin.

2. Humid or moist skin enhances the perfume.
I know you’ve heard this before but simply ignored it but do it. Buy a body lotion that is part of the perfume line (this is, honestly, where Bath and body Works is my bff for life). “Layering is key,” says internationally renowned perfumer Claude Dir. “Apply the body lotion first, and then spritz the scent.” (Check out when I got to meet to Claude Dir here). Using the body lotion as a base before applying perfume is great because when the perfume evaporates off your skin, the lotion will be there to back you up.

3. If you don’t want to buy and use a body lotion with the same fragrance…
…apply an unscented lotion onto damp skin. Using light antiperspirants with perfume typically enhances the fragrance and does not conceal it. damp skin is key here as the moisture locks in and prevents any ashyness and dryness on the skin.

4. Identify your pulse points
Pulse points are typically the wrist, behind the ear, crook of the arm and knee, and base of the throat. This is where the blood vessels are closest to the skin giving off more heat and acting like mini fragrance pumps. When the scent mixes with your personal body chemistry, the scent comes of bigger and better! Make sure these are clean and moisturized.

5. Spray the perfume into the air and step into it
This allows the scent to envelops your entire body gently. It’s a really gentle way to spray perfume and avoid it from being too harsh or heavy. Scent travels upward so don’t neglect the pulse points that are found in the upper part of your body.

6. Apply before you dress.
It’s best to put perfume on before you dress so that the clothing does not sap up the fragrance. Also, keep in mind that lighter notes (like florals) dissipate more quickly than stronger scents like musk. Perfume on skin means that it becomes warmer and rises with your temperature.

7. As with skincare, avoid sunlight.
Direct sunlight can unbalance the ingredients. It is best to store perfume in a cool, dark place. With your skin however, it’s best to apply sunscreen. =)

8. You’re hot then you’re cold
But your fragrances shouldn’t be. Fragrances should be kept away from excessive heat or cold. To avoid evaporation, make sure that the cap is kept tightly closed. This also allows the scent to maintain fragrance integrity.

9. Know what you’re buying!
Fragrances are typically classified according to the strength of their scent. this is normally based on the concentration of scent oils and levels of alcohol. “Parfum” or “Perfume” contains the highest concentration of these oils. Then come Eau de parfum, Eau de toilette, Eau de cologne and lastly body sprays and lotions. If you are using a parfum, less is more! It takes very little layering to make the scent stand out, so don’t OD!

10. Lastly, scents DO expire.
Scents are typically good three to six months after the bottle is opened. This is because the alcohol and the aldehydes (the organic compounds) dissipate and actually change the chemical composition and nature of the scent. If you use scent past its expiration date, don’t expect it to last very long on your skin. This, too me, is controversial (ok not really controversial) The first perfume that was bought for me, and me alone (I used to just steal my mom’s perfumes) was Glow by J.Lo. That was when I turned sixteen. Now 5 years later I still have the bottle (though it’s half done and I use it only for the utmost special days…call it nostalgia). The scent has stayed the same throughout the years and is one of the most long lasting scents I’ve ever owned.

and remember with perfume you can
…increase your feelings of well being and mood. Nothing lifts you up quicker than a spritz of your favorite perfume or a whiff of the cologne your man wears daily.

…start ‘em young! Introduce the wondrous world of fragrance to every young person you know. It is never too soon for them to experience the fun and benefits of amazing scents!

…make life for you and those around you infinitely more pleasurable and enjoyable
